Istanbul Youth Council organized a series of events on Solid Waste Management in line with World
Habitat Day theme of 2018.
In the first of the events held during the month of October, the Environmental Cleaning Unit of the
Istanbul Youth Council gathered garbage on the coastline and seas with the Istanbul Metropolitan
Municipality’s sea surface cleaning vehicles for three days. Another activity took place in Üsküdar
Coast. The youth gathered rubbish at Üsküdar’s Coast to set an example and contribute to the
cleanliness of the environment.
In another event held in October, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Youth Council Healthy Life
Club took a technical trip to one of Turkey’s leading environmental management company ISTAÇ Inc.
During the trip, young people received detailed information about how the collected wastes were
classified and how these wastes were benefited. In addition, it had the opportunity to learn first-
hand how the waste management contributed to companies and the country’s economy in general.
Young people who had the opportunity to see on the spot how difficult even a single waste in nature
was recovered, examined the field where these works were carried out and then listened to the
presentation from a person in charge in a place allocated to them.
For the last event of October, the Council organized a seminar program on Solid Waste Management
in Sarachane. Approximately 150 young people participated in the seminar program focused on Solid
Waste Management, Damage of Solid Waste on the Environmental and Human Health, Collecting,
Reusing, Recycling, Energy Recovery, Storage and Solid Waste Disposal Methods.
In the seminar, it was emphasized that these methods, which were developed in order to prevent the
harmful effects of solid wastes on the environment and human health, should be carried out in a
controlled way and the participants were informed about these methods.
Istanbul Youth Council will continue its studies on sustainable urbanization in Istanbul.
